Lemon Garlic Baked Basa Fish

Lemon Garlic Baked Basa Fish is my blog’s most searched and viewed recipe and is an absolutely lovely fish dish to try. In our house I try and make fish on Friday’s (“Fishy Friday’s” as I tell my kids), and this is a new type of fish and recipe that I tried that definitely now has a place in the rotation. Note: If you do not like or wish to use Basa then try another firm white fish. I am continuing to educate myself on sustainable fish and the Vancouver Aquarium’s Ocean Wise site is a great resource.

**Update: Link here for more amazing and scrumptious Basa Fish recipes: Basa Fish TacosCreamy Crunchy Baked Basa (our family’s favourite and kid approved!), Panko Crusted Basa Fish Sticks and Pan Roasted Basa with Fingerling Potatoes and Onions.

Ingredients:

  • 3 basa fillets (this served 2 adults and 2 children)
  • Salt and pepper to season
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 lemon, thinly sliced
  • Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Directions:

  1. Pre-heat the oven to 400 degrees.
  2. Place fish fillets in a 9 x 13 baking dish and season with salt and pepper.
  3. Combine melted butter with the garlic and baste each basa fillet with the mixture.
  4. Layer lemon slices over each fillet.
  5. Top baking dish with aluminum foil and place in the oven.
  6. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until fish are totally opaque and fully cooked . . . cooking time will depend on the size and thickness of the fish – check on it and when it is totally opaque and flakes it will be ready.
  7. Remove from oven and serve with fresh parsley for garnish if desired (I didn’t have any on hand when I made it but I wish I had as it would have finished it off perfectly).

Note: if you need more or less fish just add more butter, garlic and lemon as needed . . . I used 1 garlic clove and 1 tablespoon of butter per fillet. 1 lemon was more than enough for 3 fillets and I think could be stretched out for 4.

Could you please tell me how to cook basa without it sticking to the pan, I’d like to do so without much oil. I like to cook it in a frying pan with aound 1/2 tbls if evoo but it sticks like crazy and ruins everything.
Also I tried searching for a link or article ( or anything ) for the mention of basa fish from the Dr. Oz show but haven’t had any luck. If you have any links I could show friends and family I’d be appriciated. I makes me angry when I hear my people say basa is the worst fish lol.
    Great recipies!!

      Hi Sarah,

I have not cooked Basa in a frying pan yet but if I did I would probably use one of my non-stick pans and a bit of extra virgin olive oil. I have to admit I do tend to bake or broil it in the oven. There to avoid sticking I use a non-stick aluminum foil (Alcan Slide). Here is the show where Dr. Oz spoke about “Healthiest Fish” http://www.doctoroz.com/videos/healthiest-fish.

I think I will try this tonight!! 🙂 One question, does the fish need to be fresh or can it be frozen? Should I thaw it?

can you use clover instead of butter as I have no butter in the house. Also, can I use lemon juice as have no lemons? Thanks,

      Hi Jen,

I had to google search what “clover” is, but I see it is margarine as we call it here in Canada. I have only made with butter and fresh lemons. I am sure you could adapt with “clover” and lemon juice and garlic. Maybe throw in some finely chopped shallots and parsley too? Have fun and experiment, I think keeping the fish moist as it bakes is the key. Thanks for visiting my blog!

    Hi, Kara,
I cooked it with lemon juice, ‘clover’ margarine (half the fats of butter – so a lot healthier than butter), garlic and a small amount of chopped onions. I served with new potatoes in a garlic and herb (fresh parsley and basil) with melted ‘clover’ margarine coating and grilled red pepper and courgette side with chantelle carrots. Never having Basa fillet before, hence searching web for recipes, It was absolutely lovely! I will offer my husbands opinion tomorrow as he is now contently (I hope!) sound asleep. Thanks for now. Jen.

The Margarine vs Butter is a topic indeed! Less of both is a good idea, but in cooking I tend to use just a bit of butter.
